FAQ
What temperature should I use for HTV on cotton T-shirts?
Most HTV brands recommend 305-320°F (150-160°C) for cotton. Press for 15-20 seconds with medium pressure. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions on the vinyl carrier sheet, as some specialty HTV (glitter, foil, flock) may need different settings.
What is the difference between HTV and adhesive vinyl?
HTV (heat transfer vinyl) is applied with a heat press or iron to fabric. The adhesive activates with heat. Adhesive vinyl (permanent or removable) has a pressure-sensitive backing and sticks to smooth surfaces like glass, metal, plastic and wood without heat. Use HTV for T-shirts and bags; use adhesive vinyl for decals, signs and tumblers.
What is the best heat press for beginners?
The VEVOR 8-in-1 Heat Press is a strong choice for beginners. It includes multiple attachments (mug, hat, plates) so you can try different projects without buying separate machines. The Cricut EasyPress Mini is another option if you only need small designs on pockets or baby items.
Do I need transfer tape for HTV?
No. HTV has a carrier sheet that you peel after pressing. Transfer tape is used for adhesive vinyl to pick up cut designs and apply them to surfaces. If you use permanent vinyl for decals or signs, you will need transfer tape.
Can I use a heat press for sublimation?
Yes. Many heat presses work for both HTV and sublimation. Sublimation requires higher temperatures (around 400°F) and works on polyester or polyester-coated blanks (mugs, tumblers, shirts). Check that your press reaches the required temperature and has the right attachments for your blank. See our Sublimation Hub for more.
